Lord, Be My Portion

Today I was listening to a radio program at lunch, Midday Connection from Moody Broadcasting.  The topic was about how women can live daily in faith.  A certain caller’s comment caught my attention.  She explained to the host that she knew she was a Christian & she felt how God helped her.  She walks daily and prays the whole way, thanking Him for His blessings and asking for help in a certain family situation that she has to face daily.  Her question went something like this “I’m doing all I know to do but why does chaos still seem to follow me?”  In response to her cry for help, the host encouraged her to pray and ask God, “Lord, be my daily portion.”  She reflected on how God provided for the children of Israel; He sent them their portion of manna for the day… not the whole week.  She went on to explain that our whole world is filled with chaos, even our weather is in turmoil.  But, in the midst of what we must go through, God will provide our portion.

After hearing that, something clicked in my head and the tears came to my eyes.  I pretty much missed the rest of the broadcast because the only thing I could do was cry and say, “DUH JENNY!!!”  Why did God do that?  It hit me like a brick and in an instant, He gave me the most simplistic answer, and that being, He wants us to ask him everyday!  Meaning, HE WANTS TO COMMUNICATE WITH US DAILY!

We can go to the grocery and stock up on chicken when it’s on sale.  We can buy an extra deodorant when we have a coupon and put it in the closet.  But, can we really stock up on prayer?  I don’t think we can ever be thankful enough that we can miss a week or even a day and not give thanks.

God wants to be involved in our EVERYDAY lives… not just our weekly pity party of crying and whining to God because everything we have tried on our own messes up.  Why do attempt to take charge & stress ourselves out over things we should go to God in prayer over?  And, what does He need me for?  Why does He want to hear from me about every little thing all the time?  Because, He is our Father.  He chose us.  He loves us.  –And-  It delights Him to supply what we have need of.  We need to thank God every day for what He has provided.  Most importantly, we need to communicate with Him.  In that, I know I have failed.  We say blessing over the meals. We pray before we sleep.  But to really communicate, you have to have a conversation.

I think I will change the way I pray today.  I will not pretend to be in charge of my life anymore but I will pray and ask God to.  Then, I will listen… every day.
